1. You have to make the book hard to put down. Add details, but not so many that the reader falls asleep. i.e. instead of putting "I ran to the house" or "I dashed off in a northernly direction toward the house which had..." put something more detailed but not painstakingly detailed. Try something like "Dropping the garden hose, I took off toward the house hoping that the cake hadn't burned down the kitchen. I ran up the stairs of the back porch and barged into the large kitchen, and almost made my grandpa one with the floor."
2. Develop a good plot. It's kind of hard to concentrate with a weak plot. You may try a dramatic one, like a friend of yours goes missing for days, and he/she is found in the woods, with a serious case of amnesia. A lot of people love dramatic books.
3. Make your characters interesting and realistic. Maybe the mean girl that used to be the geek, and is now evil. Or maybe the villan with a bad past, and who wants revenge.
4. Think of a great title and make an eye-catching cover.
5. Submit it to a publisher.
6. Hope you'll get famous!
Make sure to have an interesting theme. Maybe adventure, romance, murder, or mystery, for example.
Carry a notebook with you EVERYWHERE you go. You might be sitting on a toilet, and BAM! You have a great idea that will land you on TV with Oprah.
It's always a good idea to do research. Take your notebook into a Barnes & Noble. You can have some coffee and take notes.
If you're trying for an adventurous book, you might try looking at how-to books. I don't mean "how to build a good house", unless that's what your book is about. Try "The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook," which can be found in the humor section. It has a lot of useful information, and will be great for an adventure book.
Take notes, but don't load your book with boring information!
If you have writer's block, take a break. Read another book. Take a walk. Watch TV. Soon, you'll be typing at the keyboard until 5:30 in the morning!
Don't use someone else's ideas. You don't want to be sued.
Don't use copyrighted information.
